Learnership Programme

A learnership programme is a structured, work-based learning path combining theoretical education with practical, on-the-job training, resulting in a nationally registered qualification (NQF). Designed to address skills shortages, these 12-month+ programmes allow learners to gain experience while earning a stipend, and are accessible to both unemployed individuals and existing employees.

Key aspects of a learnership include:

·         Structure: Comprises approximately 30% theoretical classroom learning and 70% practical work experience.

·         Participants: Involves a three-way agreement between the learner, an employer (providing work experience), and an accredited training provider

·         Qualification: Leads to a recognized qualification (NQF 1-10) upon completion.

·         Benefits: Participants receive a monthly allowance (stipend) while gaining skills and experience.

·         Applicability: Suitable for school-leavers, college graduates, and the unemployed looking to enter the workforce.

Do you get paid for a learnership?

learnership typically pay a monthly stipend or allowance, not a full salary, to cover expenses like travel and meals while you gain practical skills and theoretical knowledge for a qualification, with the exact amount depending on the industry, SETA (Sector Education and Training Authority), and NQF level. This payment is a requirement, ensuring learners can afford to complete their training, and it's funded by the employer.

What You Get Paid:

·         Allowance/Stipend:

A monthly payment intended to cover your day-to-day costs (travel, food, stationery).

·         Not a Salary:

It's a grant for training, not full wages, though some longer-term learnerships may function more like fixed-term employment with salaries.

How Much:

·         Variable:

Amounts differ based on the specific learnership and the qualification's level (e.g., R2,500 for some MICT SETA programs).

·         Agreed Upon:

The allowance amount and conditions are set and agreed upon before the learnership starts.

Who Pays:

·         Employer: The company offering the learnership pays the stipend as part of skills development, sometimes with support from SETAs.

·         SETA: Sector Education and Training Authorities often fund these stipends.

Key Benefits:

·         Earn While You Learn: Get practical experience and a qualification without the cost of tuition.

·         Cover Expenses: The stipend helps you focus on your training without financial stress.
